Everything is about to change.
Michael Avon Oeming’s magnum opus ends this week with The Victories #15. Published by Dark Horse Comics, with colors by Nick Filardi, the cover to The Victories #15 is a wraparound featuring all six original members of The Victories from happier times.
With the fast first page recap, the reminder that the Annunaki created the heroes and have returned to pass judgment is immediately in your face. Faustus is continuing his struggle against his father with the Annunaki looming over their heads.
Michael Avon Oeming makes Faustus face the most difficult decision he’s ever had to make: join forces with The Bilderberg Society or possibly doom all of earth. Faustus’ father does literally everything in his power to compel him to action. The Annunaki’s choice of appearance to humans through time along with their various names tying together all religions is a stroke of genius. The revelation of the Annunaki’s deep roots throughout all of human history and their subsequent decision as watchers keep them on the god-tier they deserve.
When the Annunaki’s representative to Faustus marvels at humanity’s eagerness to do battle, Oeming’s decision to show the passing of time with soldiers through history is a small, but striking scene. The panel with the fibonacci sequence reflected in Faustus’ eye is my favorite with its imposing contrast provided by Nick Filardi’s color work.
The Victories is Michael Avon Oeming’s masterwork commentary on society with its reliance on violence, obsession with perfection and idol worship. Through Faustus, he shows that although the world may be a dark place, there is still hope.
