The Dragons' Tyranny Continues in Dungeons & Dragons: The Legends of Baldur's Gate #2!

If they are evil, I will smash them.

IDW Publishing’s Dungeons & Dragons: The Legends of Baldur’s Gate #2 releases this week. Written by Jim Zub with art by Max Dunbar and colors by John-Paul Bove and Joana Lafuente, the main cover by Sarah Stone features a portrait of Neera casting a spell. This second issue also launches with three variant covers: a subscription only, a retailer incentive and a retailer exclusive for Peachstate Hobby Distribution.

Jim Zub keeps the action going by jumping right into it with Minsc and Neera running from the law. They team up with two thieves also on the run. In typical fantasy fashion, the watchguards are inept and clumsy. The Flaming Fist Company is a great name for a mercenary group and dipping into Neera’s childhood with Deniak is a good flashback.

Max Dunbar’s realistic art is some of the most detailed art this side of Geof Darrow. The cityscapes are jampacked with buildings and the fetcher’s house’s bookshelves are filled to the brim with books. His action scenes use skewed panels to highlight the momentum of the battle. John-Paul Bove and Joana Lafuente’s colors stick towards the colder end of the spectrum with some neutrals except for the bright sky and even brighter spells. Neil Uyetake’s use of red lettering to signify someone casting a spell is a small, but nice touch.

I’m a fan of any comic that includes magic missiles (which is not nearly enough). Zub and Dunbar create a fun adventure set in the world of Baldur’s Gate that any fantasy fan or fan or the game would love.
