The Hit Card Game Comes To Comics in Munchkin #1!

A perfect introduction to the world of Munchkin!

The hit card game Munchkin becomes a comic this week, thanks to Boom Studios. The first issue contains three stories by Tom Siddell, Mike Holmes, Jim Zub, and Rian Sygh, and each first printing contains an exclusive game card. Issue 1 comes with a main cover by Ian McGinty and features variant covers by Tyler Jenkins, Shelli Paroline and Braden Lamb, John Kovalic, Evan Palmer, Paul Maybury, and Daniel Bayliss.

The first story, What Is A Munchkin is by Tom Siddell, Mike Holmes, and Fred Stresing. This short story is a great introduction to the world of Munchkin, exploring the rules and aspects of the card game, down to betraying your teammates for extra loot. Holmes’ use of hand drawn character tokens is a nice idea to separate the player and the story.

The second story, Humans Got No Class is also by Tom Siddell, Mike Holmes, and Fred Stresing. This longer story explores the dungeon crawling nature of Munchkin and further explains the meaning of race and class in game. It gets meta at the end making great use of the importance of player characters. Tom Siddell gets to play with dialogue, showing his strong storytelling and sense of humor, alongside Holmes’ use of various panel layouts to add variation and action to the story.

The last story by Jim Zub and Rian Sygh is Ready For Anything and covers the importance of a solid inventory to an adventurer. Sygh’s art style is more in line with Kovalic’s, with his use of thin lines, giving it more of a Munchkin feel, than the two previous stories. This style of story is perfect for Zub showing his creativity on items such as the warscrewdriver, which is 18% more useful than a warhammer.

I was hesitant to read a comic based on a card game, but with a solid creative team onboard, this debut issue is a perfect introduction to the world of Munchkin.
