Our Love is Real Review

GLX takes a look at the bizarre comic known as Our Love is Real.

Writer - Sam Humphries
Artist - Steven Sanders

Comics are one of many mediums that have dealt with sexuality. A typical comic about sexuality usually involves individuals with godly physiques, graphic moments of intimacy, or concerns among individuals that maybe be a part of the LGBT community. Our Love is Real bypasses all of that and goes into the deep. It may lack love scenes (in the traditional sense) and nudity, but handles its subject matter with ease.

Five years after a vaccine for AIDS has been released, the world is filled people that are sexually into things such as animals, vegetables and minerals. How AIDS plays into the rise of humanity's sexually extreme interests isn't clearly explained. Still, there's plenty to enjoy about the writing.

Jok and Brin's relationship is at the heart of the comic; Jok has a relationship with a bitch (in the literal sense) and Brin is a mineralsexual (she has sex through meditation). In a way, Jok and Brin's sexual preferences reflect their personalities. Jok is a rough cop that likes to get physical, while Brin comes across as a more spiritual person. While Sam Humphries could've just slapped random sexual interests onto these characters, he uses their interests to enhance them. It's clearly visible that he thought the premise through, instead of going for cheap shock moments.

Steven Sanders handles the art and it's nice on the eyes. His layouts give the comic a nice flow, while his depiction of the comic's individuals are consistent and lively. Sanders' work is in black and white, but I feel that it's for the better.

The one thing going against the comic is its format and price. It's an 8 x 8 black and white comic for $4. While I've only read a review copy, I'm interested to see how it'd read in my head. Still, I have to question the price tag based on the size of the comic. I imagine these things will keep some away from the comic.

If you can handle the format, the premise and price, then you'll have a good time with Our Love is Real. It's content stands out and is a breath of fresh air in the market. Hopefully, Humphries and Sanders will revisit this world again.
