Title: New Warriors #1
Writer: Kevin Grevioux
Artist: Paco Medina
Publisher: Marvel
In comics, there’s something called the “first issue curse” (yes, I just made that up). It’s where the first issue of a series sets things up but because it doesn’t get to the action and kapowction (I made that up too), it sucks. Not the case here. In New Warriors #1, the new X-Man formerly known as Wind Dancer, SofÃa Mantega Barrett, is now living a normal life as a waitress and talks to a young man called Barry at the diner she works at. As she’s doing that, a mysterious group calling itself the New Warriors are fighting villains. Turns out, “Barry” is connected to this group as he reveals himself as Beak, a former X-Man, and that Night Thrasher’s still alive.
What makes New Warriors #1 special is that Grevioux does a great job of introducing the reader to Sofia, the people in her life, and everyday life for her. It never feels slow or boring. And Medina’s doing some very good art which makes the issue very enjoyable.
To discuss.
