GLX reviews Akira Toriyama's Sand Land.
Sand Land TPB
Writer/Artist: Akira Toriyama
Back in the day, I'd spend my afternoons watching Dragon Ball Z. The entire show was based off of the work of Akira Toriyama. Years later, I spot an odd looking manga by him called Sand Land. So, how does this oddity read?
In the future, the Earth is nothing more than a barren wasteland. The only supply of water left is in the hands of a greedy king. One day, Sheriff Rao enlists the aid Beelzebub, the prince of demons, and his assistant, Thief. Their goal? To find the mysterious Phantom Lake. During the course of their journey, secrets will surface and lives will be changed.
Toriyama's writing is just supurb. The story's world is engaging and filled with nice, little touches. His characters are interesting and have a life of their own. The plot may not bring any surprises, but there isn't anything wrong with it.
His art carries the iconic style that he uses in all of his work. What makes the art work is his basic storytelling skills. Everything looks in place and his panel work does a great job of telling his story. He just has a natural sense of what scenes need to be given more emphasis within his layouts.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with this comic. It's packed with charm and is well drawn. Even if you're not a fan of manga, I suggest giving this a look.
