Marmalade Boy vol. 1 Review

GLX reviews Marmalade Boy vol. 1.

Writer/Artist - Wataru Yoshizumi

I remember hearing about this manga a while back, but I never gave it a shot. Recently, I saw it at my local library and I picked it up. What I ended up reading was quite bizarre.

Marmalade Boy tells the tale of Miki. One day, her parents decide to divorce, but things get odd from there. They're divorcing each other because they met a nice couple, while on vacation. Now, they're trading spouses and living together in the same house. If that wasn't enough, Miki may have a thing for her new stepbrother named Yuu.

Needless to say, this manga is off the wall. I don't think I've ever read a piece of sequential art with such odd relationships as in Marmalade Boy. Despite the quirky nature of the work, the writing is slightly entertaining. The character is enjoyable, though I would've liked to see the parents have a little more depth to them. One thing that stuck out(outside of the bizarre relationships) was the inclusion of side notes. Even though they provided some nice tidbits of information, they felt a little off.

Yoshizumi's art is nice, for the most part. The story is told clearly, though there could be some more style in depicting day-to-day scenes. Not to say that there aren't any nice artistic choices in some scenes, but Yoshizumi's style needs a little umph to make the art pop.

Marmalade Boy is one weird work. It's weirdness has a certain charm to it, but that doesn't mean that there isn't room for improvement. The only thing that would get me to read volume 2 would be to see how odd the story can get.

6* out of 10*
