Indie comics expert Greg reviews the latest from Outhouse favorite Nathan Edmondson!

Nathan Edmondson is still a newbie to the world of comics and seeing him grow and develop his ideas is something I’ll be looking forward t. I was very impressed and entertained with his debut comic, Olympus, released from Image Comics last year with Christian Wade. This time, Edmondson teams up with Surrogates artist Brett Weldele to weave us into another adventure in Image Comics' The Light. But based on the first two issues, will this be a good follow up from Olympus?
At the very beginning of the story, we are introduced to Coyle, a man who was just let go from his job. Based on the comments of his co-workers, he’s not a pleasant man to work with. He drinks a lot and is a wife-beater. Not a likable guy at all. The instant he comes home, he wants a drink and we meet his mother and daughter, Avery, who absolutely hates him. He takes a nap and wakes up to shouts of “HELP!”
He investigates and finds his former boss running towards him and telling him to avoid the light. Suddenly, the boss begins to burn up and actually implodes. Coyle gets into the house to get his daughter out and sadly watches his mom literally implode. When Coyle and Avery make it to the outside, we see houses with flashes bursting out the windows and people burning up. Coyle and Avery run away, avoiding the light in order to stay alive and figure out what the hell is going on.
So far this is a very interesting read but not without some flaws. For one, it’s very fast paced. When I say very, it’s very. Maybe a bit too fast. Edmondson drops us quickly into this horror/suspense story to the point where there doesn’t seem to be much of a breather. I’m personally more into a horror story that builds up slowly and then reaches it’s climax, so this may just be my own personal taste.
The first issue moves so fast, and while I’d have been happier with a slower pace, I do like that Edmondson isn’t wasting time to tell this story. He's introduced the characters and already I feel I have a grasp as to who they are. It’ll be very interesting to see how they develop throughout this mini, and how they will interact with other survivors.
The second issue reads a lot better than the first one, as we're introduced to more characters and we begin to see just what else we, as readers, may be in for with this series. This will surely be another survivor book, but one with promise. Based on the second issue, the suspense is sure to pick up and I hope Edmondson follows it up.
Weldele's art I find myself really enjoying. The atmosphere he's producing really helps add character and mood to the book with some great panels. One panel with a plane passing over a highway in the second issue automatically comes to mind. But the real victory from the art is Weldele’s depiction of light. The effects of actually seeing characters fuming and then imploding are very grabbing images and already work effectively. I also found myself smiling at shots of houses burning up in the background along with his trees and smoke. Visually, this book is already winning me over and I applaud Edmondson in thus far grabbing some great artists to get his ideas onto paper.
If you’re into the survivor type stories, this may be worth checking out. As a fan of horror and of Edmondson’s Olympus, I’m looking forward for the next few issues. This may not quickly rock your socks just yet, but we’re introduced to a very moody and already tense situation with a bizarre but original situation. I’m very much down to see where this leads to.
