Book Review: Hexed by Kevin Hearne

The easy review is: If you liked the first book, you'll like this one. It really doesn't differ much from 'Hounded', though it takes some baby steps forward on Atticus' relationships with the various supernatural entities he interacts with. The story moves along so fast that he doesn't offer much time for anything but the plot to drive the story. Which is also it's asset - at least for me - in that dealing with so many powerful characters it doesn't waste a lot of time building false tension. It also moves along quickly enough that I really don't find myself questioning some of the little things that might not fit perfectly together (such as his 'modern personality' at his age- even with light explanations offered). Hearne leaves you with little time to reflect or pick apart details as the action builds and builds. 'Hexed' is as fun a read as 'Hounded' was. In a way this series is like a guilty pleasure read for me, something I don't find myself getting into very deeply mentally or emotionally, but simply having a fun read in between what can sometimes be heavy stories.
Bottom Line:
Fans of the first book should definitely be reading this, as well as other urban fantasy fans of books like Butcher's 'Dresden Files' or Correia's 'Monster Hunters" series. It's fun, fast paced with a little humor and good action scenes. It's available now as a paperback, as is the first book 'Hounded' and the next in the series "Hammered'.
