The Skrull invasion is HERE!!

*New episodes have begun airing in Australia since the last week in May. The USA won't be getting new episodes of this show until possibly June 24. Alas for us, those Aussies so far have five episodes up on us and more on the way. Thus the episodes are now online to be watched. So for those wondering how I got to see this episode early, there's your answer.
A lone Skrull ship has crashed landed in Wakanda and its occupants are the Avengers. They claim that just after Season 1's finale they were all kidnapped and replaced by Skrulls. Meanwhile, Nick Fury pieces together just who truly is a Skrull and who isn't. But is he too late? Plus: DOOM!
The story has been building for months and now it has arrived. All the pieces that hinted or teased for this Skrull Invasion are unleashed. For some characters, it hits them pretty hard. Others, they don't even realize the revelations haven't even hit yet. Regardless, it all hits the fan in this episode.
I confess the whole long lost Avengers alibi is a good one. You could buy that they all were replaced. However, since we as viewers know certain events, that more than likely is the logical outcome. Regardless, seeing Ms. Marvel and Black Panther obviously flustered at the fact they just don't know who is who is exciting because of how long it takes them both to realize who's a Skrull. The tension between them is so great.
As this goes on, all the events that have transpired thus far hit certain characters. Fury learns the Hulk's fate from the previous episode, and it all falls into place just who is a Skrull to him and who isn't. That's pretty much the downside since at the end of Who Do You Trust? Fury felt that anyone could be a Skrull even amongst his own secret team he'd assemble to find out just that. That pretty much was the only weak spot for me.
On the opposite side, we learn Doom's grand move in this all: giving Stark the means to reveal Skrulls. It isn't all Dark Reign like I had hoped, but the motives of Doom are perfectly in character. The man isn't going to dirty his hands when he has heroes such as Iron Man to do it for him. Again it's a perfect out for the Doom subplot. I just wish we had more since it IS Doctor Doom and I want more of this version against the Avengers. Alas it seems I cannot have that wish.
Anyway, back to the episode. Specifically how well this episode shows that this show is good at the world it plays in. We got almost every corner of the Marvel Universe (save cosmic) represented in the episode. There are cameos upon cameos either on Fury's wall to the Skrulls' elimination of threats or when their invasion hits. It's all so very geeky with the Doom appearance just adding to it. This series is pretty much the Justice League/Justice League Unlimited for Marvel. It's just ripe with all the things a fan loves of Marvel in animated form. Besides just seeing every Avenger, that's this show's other great quality and it's one you can't help smile at like a big geek.
Likewise another great stand-by has been the action. Here the episode has plenty of that. The match-ups are all what you've wanted to see. We see Skrull sleeper agents versus Avengers action, plus more Doom versus Iron Man. All of it is quite thrilling and it has so many good moments for the characters. I think thus far this episode has my favorite Ms. Marvel, Hawkeye, and Wasp moments, period. Their moments are so well delivered you can't help have the inner fanboy within you scream: "YES! That was freaking awesome!"
It was a long time coming, but this episode hit every note so perfectly. Every subplot the show has built for this Skrull Invasion gets answered for the most part, save Skrull Cap, the sleeper agents acting, and real Cap with those who were replaced arriving back on Earth. Yeah we are definitely seeing those in the next episode. But this one delivered so much. Thankfully the wait won't be agonizing. Regardless, this was one of the best episodes the show has had.
5 out of 5
