Review: Punk Rock Jesus

Review: Punk Rock Jesus

By Rui Esteves in Blog on May 11, 2013

Cover Sean Murphy (Joe the Barbarian, Off Road) writes and draws this original take on religion, reality TV and redemption.Ophis, a big american corporation, decides to clone Jesus Christ from DNA taken from the Shroud of Turin and make a reality TV show from it. Chris (Jesus Christ clone) is born and is raise in the J2 complex along side his mother, body guard and other Ophis staff. But is this complex safe enough to protect him from the World? Or to protect the world from him?Chris is going to leave his mark on the World. Through Punk Rock music Chris will fight against blind religious fanaticism and corporate greed. How is it?The story is basically that. A clone of Jesus Christ become a megastar in his own reality TV show. Then he wakes up and is introduced in the "real world". Then he joins a punk rock band and takes the world by storm. Its actually more complex than this, but going into detail could spoil any of the great moments the book as prepared for you. Instead I'll describe my personal reading experience with Punk Rock Jesus. NAC Attack I came into this book wanting to love it. I've followed Sean Murphy's work relatively closely and have been accustomed to great things from him. Be it as a writer or an artist Sean usually delivers top notch work. And I expected nothing less than great this time.In the first third of the book, while the story mainly revolves around Chris's mother and her relationship with both J2 and the rest of the World, I was a bit disappointed at first. Many characters come off as one dimensional and even as caricatures of stereotypes (like the Catholic fanatic and the Scientific agnostic commentator). I was expecting more Jesus and less IRA.Then in the last two thirds the book got amazingly good. The characters get fleshed out and gain several layers of depth that allow the reader to connect with them. You bond emotionally with the characters and take a genuine interest with their fate. Religious fanaticism, corporate greed and, in a smaller amount, a sense of karmic justice populate this section of the book. The how's and why's of every main character is very neatly seamed together with the main story. One aspect of this book were the quality of Sean Murphy's work is unquestionable is the art department. The Black & White art is near perfect. Every book drawn by Sean Murphy increases in quality. In Punk Rock Jesus Sean went for a highly detailed art style with very dynamic panel layouts and fluid action. There are a few areas where he can improve, but art wise this book is a absolute joy to behold. Chris and the Flak Jackets The character designs are unique. The reader is never confused about what or whom he/she is looking at. The visual transformation the Chris goes through since birth to punk rock superstar is just amazing to follow. Likewise for some of the other characters, like his mother or his body guard.Visually this book is never stale or boring. On the contrary, its vibrant and extremely interesting. Its made to be in B&W and its as perfect as it possible. I didn't miss color one bit.Verdict?Short version: buy it.Longer version: If you're worried that its religious propaganda or anti-religious propaganda, then don't. Its not. Its anti-fanaticism, be it religious or not. Sean Murphy showed a good amount of care when approaching some sensible issues like faith, personal freedom and dogma. Don't get stuck in the title of the book. This is not about punk rock. It is however about Jesus, or a clone of him.Punk Rock Jesus is a great book with top notch B&W art that will keep you reading until the very end. And you'll be wanting for more. I had high expectations and I was not disappointed.Publisher: VertigoYear: 2013Pages: 224Authors: Sean MurphyISBN: 1401237681Follow Reading Graphic Novels on Facebook and Twitter. Jesus My last comic book orders finally arrived. HUZZAH!This means new books to read, new adventures to have. From future semi-religious fiction to century old fantasy, going through the modern ramblings of a British chap, my next train rides are going to be really cool.It was hard to choose were to start, so many good concepts and interesting art styles to choose from. Punk Rock JesusPunk Rock Jesus was my first pick. Why? Its from Sean Murphy and it's concept stood out from the others. In the near future a big TV corporation creates a Big Brother like reality show that stars a close of Jesus Christ. Everything is controlled by them, from the virgin mother to the color of his eyes. J2 (the name of the reality show) follows the life of Chris (the clone) from before his birth until the day it all comes crashing down.Together with an ex-IRA bodyguard Chris will change the World. Perhaps not as it was intended to be and surely not in a way Chris himself predicted. This review will be posted next Saturday, 11th of May.I've not decided what book to read next. The choices are: Happy Skullkickers Volume 3 Oz: Road to Oz Judge Dredd OriginsWhat would you choose?Follow Reading Graphic Novels on Facebook and Twitter. Review: The Sixth Gun Volume 2

Review: The Sixth Gun Volume 2

By Rui Esteves in Reviews on May 5, 2013

Cover General Hume might be dead (again) and his wife gone but the cruse of the six guns continues to dictate the fate of Drake Sinclair and Becky Montcrief. Together with Billjohn's Golem and Gord Cantrell they travel to New Orleans to look for a way to break the bond between Drake and 4 o the 6 mystical guns. Drake is not coping well with the possession of 4 mystical guns. Even his physical appearance is starting to change, much like what happened to General Hume's men. However there are many factions that are plotting to gain ownership of the six guns. It won't be easy for Drake and Becky to recognize friends from foes. This volume collects issues #7 to #11 of the ongoing series. How is it? After the fantastic first arc the story took an unexpected turn and drifted away from General Hume. Before the dust had settled Drake and Becky moved on to New Orleans. There Drake looks for Henri Fournier a mysterious living legend of the occult. Drakes hopes Henri will help him break the bond with the guns. Kalfu In the meanwhile Becky get to know Kirby Hale a smooth talking gunslinger that sweeps her off her feet. Kirby will leave a big impact on Becky's life, bigger than she imagined. Becky is a teenager that lost her only family and was pushed into a situation way over her head. When Kirby enters her life she is lonely and vulnerable and he takes advantage of that. The result.. the wrath of a woman scorned. Cullen Bunn took the story in a very different path from what I was expecting. And that was a very pleasant surprise. The General Hume plot line was placed on hold and a new bunch of subplots were put into motion. This adventure in the South is more than just another adventure. Through it the true purpose of the guns is unveiled. And if that isn't enough Bunn got around to flesh out the supporting cast and add many more interesting aspects to this Universe. Art wise it continues the style of the first volume. Brian Hurtt and Bill Cabtree fill the 160 pages of this trade with vibrant panels, expressive characters and moody environments. They really capture that foggy and mysterious mood of the New Orleans swamps, or at least how I imagined them. My only complain is that they weren't more ambitious with the panel layouts. Maybe next time. Drake versus handpurse Verdict? I really enjoyed the first volume. This one not quite as good. That doesn't mean its a bad book, on the contrary, its a just the right pace of storytelling, takes its time to create the mood, throws some action scenes to spice it up a bit and good art to top the cake. However the WOW factor isn't as strong as the first one.  If you enjoyed the first one then you'll love this one. If you didn't read it then go back and read it first. PS: sorry for the 2 day delay :) Publisher: Oni Press Year: 2011 Pages: 160 Authors: Cullen Bunn, Brian Hurtt, Bill Crabtree ISBN: 1934964670 Follow Reading Graphic Novels on Facebook and Twitter. Review: Dungeons Dragons Volume 3 Down

Review: Dungeons Dragons Volume 3 Down

By Rui Esteves in Reviews on May 1, 2013

Cover Dungeon & Dragons Volume 3 brings us the story of Kahl the Song. On the way home the Fell's Five find themselves under attack by a group of unearthly monsters. They're able to fend them off, but barely. While this is happening Kahl (the Dwarf) is getting some news that make him return home. Once he gets there his big secret is reveled. Be prepared, its not what I expected. This is also the reason why he was roaming the world training to became a Paladin. How is it? Kahl and the rest of our protagonists are going to have to face one of the fiercer and most frightening beast in all and any Universe... a mother-in-law. And this one is as bad as they come. She really has it out for Kahl because of his little secret. All in all she just want's the best for her little girl and she won't make it easy for the friendly dwarf. Call to Arms Everyone decides to help Kahl when he sets out to rescue his loved one that has been lost in the mines. There are many surprises along the way. Fake friends, ancient evil, monsters and evil magic will try to prevent the success of our heroes. John Rogers weaves a simple but entertaining story. Filled with action but also infused with enough purpose to make the reader very attached to these characters. While this might not be a dissertation on the human condition, its not without its meaning. Its more than just a punchy kicky story. Most characters have multiple dimensions to them and are much more than the cardboard cutouts that usually populate the fantasy genre. Art wise this third volume continues on the great path defined in the previous ones. Andrea Di Vito is just the right amount of sexy, dramatic, dynamic and contemplative. Its a style I enjoy very much. Thankfully its not like the "realistic" trend present in many modern days comics. Another aspect I love about Andrea's style is the panel layouts. He plays around with them, overlapping and merging them in a way that accentuates the action when its appropriate. A more static and standard layout is used when action is not present. This allows for a visual change of pace that complements the art and story in a sublime, but powerful, way. The Plan Verdict? This series is top notch, and this third volume is no exception. Its a fun book with awesome art that will entertain you. You won't regret adding this one to your collection. If you get the Hardcover edition (I did) it will fit gorgeously in your shelves. If you aren't familiar with this series, check out my reviews of the Volume 1 and Volume 2.
