"It is a dark time for the Rebellion." Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back opens with those ominous words in its opening crawl, and it seems that Star Wars: The Last Jedi could open with a similar "it is a dark time for the Resistance". InEntertainment Weekly, The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson talks about the state of the Resistance:

"They’re a small band that’s now cut off, on its own, and hunted when the Republic is shattered. When the First Order did that hit, the Resistance is isolated, and they're very, very vulnerable. That's where we pick them up."

The article also hints that there might be some conflict within the Resistance, possibly between General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) and Vice Admiral Holdo (Laura Dern). While this conflict wasn't stated outright, Johnson did speak about the Resistance's internal issues:

"I don’t want to tip the hat too much, but I will say that the heat is immediately turned up on the Resistance" … "Everybody is put in a pressure cooker right away, and relationships crack and strain under that pressure. That was really interesting to me, the notion of putting this small army under a lot of external pressure and showing some of the results within the Resistance itself."

Speaking of relationships, we learned a little about how Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega) and Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran) will work with one another yesterday. Today we are getting word of another interesting dynamic in The Last Jedi, that between Leia and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac). Isaac spoke about how Leia sees Poe:

"Poe is in some ways a surrogate son for Leia" … "But also I think she sees in him the potential for a truly great leader of the Resistance and beyond."

Isaac also expands on his character's arc in relation to Leia:

"Poe's arc is one of evolving from a heroic soldier to a seasoned leader, to see beyond the single-mindedness of winning the battle to the larger picture of the future of the galaxy" … "I think Leia knows she won't be around forever and she, with tough love, wants to push Poe to be more than the badass pilot, to temper his heroic impulses with wisdom and clarity."

It might be a good idea to bring some tissues to the film Carrie Fisher fans, as Johnson talks about her role in her last Star Wars film:

"There’s no way that we could’ve known this would’ve been the last Star Wars movie she would be in, so it’s not like we made the film thinking that we were bringing closure to the character" … "But watching the film, there’s going to be a very emotional reaction to what she does in this movie."

Entertainment Weekly also gave us a little clue to Benicio del Toro's role in The Last Jedi. Known as "DJ" on the set (we're not sure if he will be referred to as that in the film), del Toro will be playing a shady character who we first got a glimpse of via Vanity Fair. Now we have an official description of the character:

"DJ is an enigmatic figure whose tattered, threadbare clothes and lackadaisical attitude conceal a sharp mind and expert skills."

DJ will have a role during the Resistance's mission at Canto Bight, the casino city. John Boyega spills a little bit more about the mysterious DJ:

"We just need a codebreaker and he’s the best in the galaxy. Unfortunately, he’s very dodgy and only in it for financial gain. He doesn’t fight for any side."

Boyega continues:

"He has distinct opinions" … "The Resistance bombs the First Order one day, the First Order bombs the Resistance on another. It’s an ongoing war that will never end. For him, he’s trying to benefit off of that — which doesn’t make him the person you want to trust."

Kelly Marie Tran describes how she felt about DJ:

"When I was onset with that character, I felt like there was a tiger in the room, and I always had to be watching" … "Like an animal, at any moment he could do something, and I didn't know what."

Star Wars: The Last Jedi launches December 15.
