Cover Skullkickers Volume 2 Five Funerals and a Bucket of Blood continues the saga of our heroes Shorty and Baldy. Last time we saw them they had just saved the village of Mudwich. As a result they're invited to the capital of the Kingdom and once there are invited to a fancy dinner with some local nobles. From here on things naturally take a few turns towards the predictable unpredictable. As you might imagine Shorty isn't exactly a calm guy and Baldy is far from discrete. When they're framed for a little something something they didn't do all hell breaks loose and the find themselves against all of Urbia's population. There are minor spoilers ahead. Tread carefully. How is it? As soon as you turn the first page you know that something will go horrifically wrong. Shorty and Baldy are invited to a formal dinner with the nobles of Urbia. Can you imagine these two among civilized people? Me neither. Fate has it that the hooded assassin from the first story arc also has an interest in that very same dinner. Then a something something happens and thus begins a new adventure. NOOOOOOOOO Baldy! I don't know if Jim Zub intended to mimic the standard structure of a RPG game or not, but this story arc has a lot of similarities with it. Breaking down this story arc in a RPG game perspective: Heroes get to new town; Immediately are introduced to local problems, thus creating a new main quests; Eventually meet new (and opposing) factions; Then have to build reputation with said factions by completing quests for them; There has to be a quest for gear in order to overcome new challenges; Faction quests conflict with each other, or in other words, the heroes can't make everyone happy; Confrontations with increasingly difficult bosses; To win the final boss confrontation the heroes need to rely on the participation of one of those factions; Heroes move to the next town. After the fight between the young rebels and the superhero team sanctioned by the government, Tommy Watts is taken prisoner. Now, at the heart of the facility in which the comatose bodies of dozens of super-powered teenagers lie in perpetual slumber, he must take a decision. Will he give in to pressure and accept the orders of the authorities or will he oppose them? At the same time, the army is dealing with two gigantic teenagers. Trained to kill, the soldiers don’t believe in taking prisoners. There are a couple of double page spreads that have impressed me deeply. One of them begins with a panoramic view of the battlefield followed by a huge panel in which we see the gigantic couple wreaking havoc amongst the soldiers. This is not only a magnificent exercise of perspective but also a great example of composition. We see the two teenagers from below, as if we were normal humans admiring the impossible dimensions of these giants, and we also get to admire the aggressiveness of the boy, who kicks several cars, the flying bodies and the movement are every bit as prodigious as Bryan Hitch’s pages in The Ultimates (a book which also featured gigantic men). giant teenagers / adolescentes gigantes When the missiles hit their target, we see the boy falling down unto the bridge, effectively destroying everything around him and creating a wave shock that throws many vehicles into the water. There is such a sense of density and weight in this panel, I can’t remember the last time I saw a gigantic creature portrayed in such an expressive manner. The dead of the girl, only panels after, is also deeply evocative and equally powerful. Another of my favorite pages is the one that shows the aftermath of Tommy’s reaction. Rebelling against his captors, he releases a vast amount of energy. The force of his attacks renders him unconscious, but the energy liberated awakens his brother and many of the other young men and women that had been imprisoned for months. Jonathan Ross and Bryan Hitch are a great creative team, and Hitch’s pencils are enhanced by the inks of Paul Neary and Jason Paz, as well as the coloring of Paul Mounts. _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ a great doble page spread / una gran página doble Después de la pelea entre los jóvenes rebeldes y el equipo de súper-héroes sancionado por el gobierno, Tommy Watts es tomado prisionero. Cuando los misiles dan en el blanco, vemos al chico cayendo sobre un puente, destruyendo todo alrededor y causando una onda expansiva que lanza muchos vehículos al agua. Hay un fuerte sentido de densidad y peso en esta viñeta, no recuerdo la última vez que vi a un gigante dibujado de manera tan expresiva. La muerte de la chica, pocas viñetas después, es muy evocadora, con igual poder. Otra de mis páginas predilectas es la que muestra las consecuencias de la reacción de Tommy. Al rebelarse contra sus captores, libera una vasta cantidad de energía. La fuerza de su ataque lo deja inconsciente, pero la energía soltada despierta a su hermano y a muchos de los jóvenes que habían estado prisioneros por meses. Jonathan Ross y Bryan Hitch son un gran equipo creativo, y los lápices de Hitch son mejorados por las tintas de Paul Neary y Jason Paz, así como por el coloreado de Paul Mounts.
