Nightwing sees major changes in 2013
Let us know what you'll be watching in our Primetime TV Poll for Friday 12/14
It took me a few days to read my November comics, but I’d like to share with you my opinions before I start reviewing them. This month I got to read some very interesting first issues, such as Great Pacific and Clone, which I’ll continue to buy. Sadly, that’s not the case with Bedlam, although I really enjoyed the script and the ideas presented in this first chapter, the art simply let me down. I’ve already written about Happy # 2 this week, but I intend to do the same with Lot 13, damn that was really great! I’m already writing about Frankenstein Alive Alive, which was delayed a few months but it was so amazing that it was totally worth the wait. Locke & Key Omega was also a very compelling first issue, although I can’t say the same about IDW’s Judge Dredd which lacks the sophistication and humor that only British authors are able to imbue in the lawmaker from the future. November also marks the end of The Boys with issue # 72, easily one of the best titles I’ve read in the past 6 years, and personally my favorite work from Garth Ennis. I’ll really, really miss it. And I promise to start reviewing it in 2013, because I just need to share with others how fascinating this was. And now, without further ado, here are November comics as per solicitations. BEDLAM #1 (W) Nick Spencer (A) Riley Rossmo (CA) Frazer Irving. Fillmore Press was once Madder Red, a homicidal maniac and criminal overlord who terrorized the town of Bedlam for years. The Boys' story comes to an end in this final issue containing 24 pages of story! Contains 5 pin-up pages of brand-new art as well as a complete cover gallery! CLONE #1 (W) David Schulner (A/CA) Juan Jose Ryp, Felix Serrano From ROBERT KIRKMAN's Skybound imprint, comes a sci-fi story like you've never seen before! FASHION BEAST #3 (MR) Writer: Alan Moore Cover & Art: Facundo Percio Battered and bruised, Doll discovers that to defy Celestine is to look death in the eyes. And to be at the top is an invitation to be in the crosshairs. Fashion Beast brings Alan Moore's unearthed masterpiece into the limelight after nearly thirty years! UNWRITTEN #43 (MR) (W) Mike Carey (A) Peter Gross (CA) Yuko Shimizu. What do Baron Munchausen, a Jane Austen heroine, a homicidal bear and three bad rabbits have in common? I will. PR: ASPEN COMICS KICKS OFF “10 FOR 10” WITH LEGEND OF THE SHADOW CLAN AND ADDED INCENTIVES FOR FANS AND RETAILERSBy Rui Esteves in Features on December 14, 2012
Aspen is planning to celebrate the publisher’s tenth anniversary this February in a big way, with their largest offering of new titles in their history. Launching their special “10 for 10” initiative that will feature ten new series releases, one each month over the span of ten months. Aspen’s “10 for 10” will debut with the launch of Legend of the Shadow Clan #1 on February 6th, 2013. From creators David Wohl and Brad Foxhoven (Executive Assistant: Iris) and the art team of Cory Smith and John Starr (Broken Pieces, Fathom), Legend of the Shadow Clan marks Aspen’s first all new property of 2013. Below is the publisher’s solicitation for the new Aspen release: Meet the Arashi family. They are like any other family living in the city: kids in school, parents working to make ends meet. But unbeknownst to even them, their ancestors held a dark secret: they were a clan of ninja in feudal Japan, in the employ of a prominent leader. But when that leader was murdered under mysterious circumstances, the Arashi Clan was blamed, and forced to flee, going into hiding. Over the centuries, the descendants lost track of the ancient ways. They came to America, abandoning their sordid past to distant memory. However, recently, their secret has been discovered--their ancient enemy has returned, and won't rest until every member of the Arashi clan is killed. Now, the Arashi family must rediscover their long-forgotten birthright if they hope to have any chance of surviving the onslaught to come, and along the way, they will learn the LEGEND OF THE SHADOWCLAN. To celebrate the first release of the “10 for 10” initiative and to thank fans and retailers for their support in getting Aspen Comics to the milestone decade mark, Aspen is releasing the first issue of Legend of the Shadow Clan for the highly affordable price of only $1. As well, every subsequent #1 issue for each new release in Aspen’s “10 for 10” program will be offered at the same low $1 price. To help support comic shops’ push for Legend of the Shadow #1 and the Aspen “10 for 10” titles to follow, Aspen is offering a multitude of special incentives for stores to choose from on the debut issue, priced at a near Free Comic Book Day level to retailers: Every fan or new reader who lets their local retailer know to add Legend of the Shadow Clan #1 to their subscription box is eligible to receive the special “Aspen Reserved Edition” cover for each “10 for 10” #1 title. Fans who collect all ten Reserved Edition covers at their local comic book store will then be eligible to receive the free Aspen “10 for 10” Jam Poster (to be revealed soon!) featuring characters from all ten titles and colored by superstar colorist Peter Steigerwald. Red Blue Any retailer who orders 50 copies of the $1 priced Legend of the Shadow Clan #1 will receive a signed and numbered copy of the direct cover edition, along with a certificate of authenticity. Retailers who order 100 copies of the $1 priced issue one will receive the above listed incentive as well as one free CCG 9.8 edition of Legend of the Shadow Clan #1 Reserved Edition cover. For every 250 total combined copies of the standard and Reserved Edition covers ordered, retailers will receive all of the above listed incentives and one free original hand drawn Sketch Cover by Legend of the Shadow Clan series artist Cory Smith. Custom Cover Each retailer who orders 750 total combined copies of the standard and Reserved variant edition covers are eligible to receive those copies with an exclusive cover featuring their store logo or image incorporated into the cover illustration. Qualifying retailers will be contacted to confirm the specifics of your exclusive image. All prior listed incentives are also included at this level. And for stores who order 1500 total combined copies of the standard and Reserved variant edition covers, those retailers will receive a special store signing appearance by a creator of Legend of the Shadow Clan, receive 200 additional past Aspen exclusive comics for the signing, and be included in an interior ad page of the comic promoting the event. Qualifying retailers will be contacted to confirm the specifics of your signing. This incentive is highly limited to the first five participating stores. All prior listed incentives are also included at this level. Cover During the American Civil War Becky Moncrief, an innocent girl, is taking care of her dying stepfather when all of a sudden several mysterious men storm in with the intention of taking the man and his secret possession. However things don't go according to plan for these mysterious men and with the help of Drake Sinclair, Becky Moncrief gets away with the secret possession. The secret possession turns out to be one of six evil and magical guns that not only have mystical abilities but also unlock a secret treasure. Becky Moncrief and Drake Sinclair embark on a journey through the Weird West in pursuit of the other 5 magical guns and in search of revenge for the responsible of the death of Becky's stepfather. How is it? The 6th Gun Volume 1 story takes place roughly after the end of the American Civil War. Its not the Wild West usually associated with Westerns but the Weird West riddled with elements of the occult. Missy, the undead General Oleander Hume's wife, in preparation of his returns to "life", sets her henchmen after the General's lost gun. They fail miserably and in that process the protagonists meet and partner up with the purpose of getting revenge on Missy and recovering all the 6 magical guns. Early on the reader will find out that Sinclair's motives are everything but altruistic. And thus a quest is born. A strange quest for the unlikely partners and unholy alliances that will take them through many confrontations, gunfights and discoveries of the earthly and unearthly type. Sinclair is a complex character that unveils a bit in this volume and has a couple of surprises for the reader. Becky on the other hand is a sweet girl that will have to grow up fast if she wants to survive all the mystical, occult and plain villainous menaces that will be thrown at her. Strange are the fruits from that tree. The aesthetic of it all is, for the lack of a better word, glorious. The look & feel created for The 6th Gun is vibrant, colorful and exalts the dynamic of the panels and the flow of the art created by Brian Hurtt. Brian's art is very clean and fluid. Personally I didn't thought it would be possible to describe a gunfight in a way that would be dynamic, fluid and above all capture the reader's attention and create suspense. But my doubts were proven unfounded. Brian Hurtt managed to capture the essence of a Western movie gunfight and translate it to sequential art as perfectly as it will ever get. Monster? ME?! General Hume rises again Verdict? This one is a winner. I'm not usually a fan of Westerns in any medium, but I loved the weirdness and randomness Brian Hurtt and Cullen Bunn bring to this book. Its a fast paced action book, with a Western setting and an occult flavoring. It has gunfights and zombies and zombie hellbent on revenge and bloodthirsty Civil War southern generals. What's there not to love?! The 6th Gun Volume 1 is a fun book. In this aspect its an old fashion comic, from a time when fun was what comics where about. The story is contained in this collection and, while there are a few loose ends that will connect with the next volume, it wraps up nicely. If you're either looking for a Western, an Occult or fun book, give this one a looksie.
