Neon Genesis Evangelion Vol. 3 - Yoshiyuki Sadamoto

Neon Genesis Evangelion Vol. 3 - Yoshiyuki Sadamoto

By Arion in Reviews on April 22, 2013

Shinji Ikari & Rei Ayanami Some teenagers are intensely melancholic, apathetic even. They seem to float around the world without ever touching anyone. Without ever compromising, without ever taking the risk of letting people in: I used to be like that. And Shinji Ikari, of course, is like that. After two volumes and literally hundreds of pages, he hasn’t even smiled once. And suddenly, just after he’s about to embark home with Misato Katsuragi, he runs into Toji Suzuhara and Kensuke Aida, perhaps his only two friends. It is in that moment, after fooling around with the guys, that Shinji finally laughs. It is a sound that Misato had never heard before.  Remembering the past / Recordando el pasado “I guess maybe I was just going through the motions of living”, Shinji confesses. And that reminds me of a great line from Nicole Kidman in The Hours: “My life has been stolen from me. I'm living in a town I have no wish to live in. I'm living a life I have no wish to live”. I felt completely identified with that phrase for most of my adolescence. So I understood Shinji perfectly, I knew what it felt like to go through the motions, to accept life as an obligation instead of an opportunity. There are so many philosophical interrogations in stages 13 through 19 (“White Scars”, “The Warped Room”, “What her Crimson Eyes Believe In”, “Abandoned Memories”, “The Night Before Battle”, “Blood Battle” and “The Moon Inside the Darkness”) but also action and interaction between the protagonist and the rest of the cast.  As the days go by, Misato and her new roommate Shinji learn to share the same house and coexist without unnecessary tensions… The only thing that seems to bother Shinji is the way that Misato hangs around wearing quite revealing clothes. But, wouldn’t it be a boy’s wet dream to live with a sexy woman who has no inhibitions? The thing is that, perhaps, Shinji isn’t like most boys. He isn’t like Toji or Kensuke, who are always chasing girls.  Toji is obsessed with girls, but what about Shinji? There is a very peculiar scene that takes place in Rei Ayanami’s house. Doctor Ritsuko Akagi has forgotten to give Rei’s new NERV ID card, and so Shinji has to go to her place and deliver the card. He finds a very deteriorated building and as he steps into Rai’s unlocked apartment all he can find are the signs of poverty and abandonment: dusty floors, dirty walls and lots of garbage everywhere. Sure, Shinji doesn’t live in a palace either –on the contrary, Katsuragi’s apartment is very modest– but at least he’s used to a modicum of order and decorum. None of that exists in Rai’s place. These heroes who have saved the world live like everyone else, without luxuries or sophistications –they are, indeed, in the opposite spectrum of traditional Western heroes like the Avengers who live on mansion in Fifth Avenue or the Justice League who reside on a satellite, far above the world, like gods instead of mortal men–. It is in this filthy space that Rei presents herself naked, and Shinji, out of nervousness trips and falls on top of her. There is a delicious moment of hesitation, almost of sexual tension, when Shinji is on top of her, unable to react, to either move further or remove himself from this strange embrace. Rei, as devoid of emotions as usual, doesn’t do or say anything. Shinji apologizes for intruding and drops the card. And leaves quickly. Is it the taste of unresolved sexual tensions what we –the readers– feel after this sequence? Or is it something else? Something darker and harder to explain? I can affirm that no such thing as love can exist between this boy and this emotionless girl. But there is complicity. And camaraderie. All of this is made evident when they both face a flying angel –Ramiel– with the form of a rhombus, a creature with the ability to destroy everything within a fifty miles radius. To defeat it, Shinji uses a particle cannon that will consume the entire energy supply of Japan, and Rei will shield him against the lethal energy blast of the angel. Alone, none of them can triumph, together they succeed.  _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ An awkward encounter / Un incómodo encuentro Algunos adolescentes son intensamente melancólicos, apáticos incluso. Originally Published at http://artbyarion.blogspot.com/2013/04/neon-genesis-evangelion-vol-3-yoshiyuki.html

Review: The Manhattan Projects Volume 1 Science. Bad.

Review: The Manhattan Projects Volume 1 Science. Bad.

By Rui Esteves in Reviews on April 21, 2013

Cover What if the Manhattan project was much more than just about creating the Atom Bomb? What if we were not alone in the Universe? What if there were other dimensions? In The Manhattan Projects Jonathan Hickman explores this premise and brings to life a new Universe that takes some historical figures and facts and presents them in a fresh new light with unpredictable twists and many disturbing characters. This first volume might just be the start of a long and fruitful adventure. How is it? This is a hard book to review. There isn't much I can talk about without spoiling some of the many twists and turns Hickman throws at the reader. Lets start there, Hickman's approach to this theme is the best thing about this book. At first sight there might not be much interest in a bunch of scientists going about their daily affairs and struggling to get the A-Bomb going as soon as possible. However Hickman's imagination is working overtime and that produces some really odd situations and some very disturbing characters. Welcome to the Projects The Manhattan Projects Volume 1 is mostly about setup. Its all about getting to know the characters, their past, their main dysfunctions and the status of the Projects. Who is Dr Oppenheimr? Whats so special about him and how will his duality impact the Manhattan Projects? Well, I won't spoil that, but he is, by far, the most interesting character in this first volume. He most definitely not what he appears to be. And what about Einstein? E definitely not equals mc2 with this one. Once again Hickman plays the duality card. A completely different card, but the underlying tone stays the same.I was expecting a sweet old man with a massive intellect, but humble at his core. I was also expecting him to take center stage ( he is in the cover after all). Boy was I wrong. Apart from the "meet the staff" stuff Hickman plants the seeds for many things to come. But this book isn't just about setup. In the last third of the story our Manhattan Projects scientists will get a encounter of the 3rd degree with a not so peaceful alien race. The result of this encounter makes the A-Bomb look like a footnote in the Projects achievements. The only aspect I didn't enjoy was the art. It does get better by the last pages, but the first chapter or two its Good, a Portal! hard to enjoy. Luckily the writing more than makes up for the art shortcomings. Verdict? At first I was going to stay away from this book, but after reading so many good reviews about this book I had to take a look. I'm very glad I did. I'm completely sold on this one for the long haul, and can't help it but to recommend it to anyone that enjoys comics. Fashion Beast # 7 - Moore, Johnston Percio

Fashion Beast # 7 - Moore, Johnston Percio

By Arion in Reviews on April 20, 2013

A great composer recognizes the value of silence. A great filmmaker knows the importance of a pause. In the same way, a great writer knows how to communicate something without dialogues: sometimes an image is more eloquent than any well prepared speech. The first pages of this issue are completely silent. There is not a word of dialogue, there is not a single onomatopoeia. A muted Doll wanders around the streets.  Doll in her carriage / Doll en su carruaje In a carriage pushed by men instead of horses, she sees her publicity panels being covered by an ad that reads “It’s conscription”. Many men are being conscripted. There is a war approaching. And the threat of a nuclear holocaust. But, as usual, everything that matters to the public is the fashion industry, the runways, the new outfits.    Silent sequence / secuencia silenciosa When Doll visits Celestine’s quarters, she undresses so that she can wear the new invention of the master of fashion. Celestine explains passionately the origin of this new black dress, the material, the characteristics of the design. In the end, he apologizes: “There is nothing so wearying as another’s enthusiasm”, and he is right and wrong at the same time. Surely, if we do not share our interlocutor’s enthusiasm then we must agree with this phrase, but sometimes two people can be fascinated by the same subject.  But the question remains. Can Doll truly communicate with her master? Is fashion all that matters in the world? For Tomboy this is a world of empty glamour: “This whole morbid, claustrophobic denial of bodies, denial of sex” is what Doll wants, or isn’t it? Facundo Percio has some extraordinary pages here, especially the initial mute scenes, that carry so much meaning with a visual rhythm of its own. The moment in which we see Doll naked is quite suggestive, showing a body with androgynous characteristics. Originally Published at http://artbyarion.blogspot.com/2013/04/fashion-beast-7-moore-johnston-percio.html
