FF # 1 - Matt Fraction Michael Allred

FF # 1 - Matt Fraction Michael Allred

By Arion in Reviews on January 14, 2013

Michael Allred When I read the first issue of FF (Future Foundation) in 2011, I was surprised by the scope of it. This wasn’t just a regular relaunch. It was something else. Jonathan Hickman decided it was time to take the Fantastic Four to the next step, and just like Professor X was the headmaster of the Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, Mister Fantastic became the leader of the new generation of scientists and imaginauts. Now (almost two years later) Matt Fraction is in charge of Marvel’s premiere superhero family and he is exploring the concepts of the Future Foundation with a new cast of characters, making them even more fascinating than before. FF # 1 is a great example of how to tell a good story in a single issue while introducing a whole bunch of characters to new readers. It was great for me to see the contrast between Franklin Richards and Valeria Richards, Franklin constantly acting like a kid and Valeria acting like her father’s daughter, id est, the kind of genius that reminds me of Mark Millar’s version (in his run on Fantastic Four). Reed Richards &Scott Lang (Ant-Man) It was so much fun watching the interactions between Reed Richards and Scott Lang (Ant-Man), two scientists that understand the world under very different parameters. Sue Storm and Medusa also have a great moment, as they share their concerns as mothers and adventurers. The conversation between She-Hulk and The Thing was very comical, but my favorite encounter is probably the one that involves New York’s greatest ladies’ man, Johnny Storm and Darla Deering (Ms. Thing). The Fantastic Four are looking for replacements and these individuals are the chosen ones.    Seeing the original members of the Future Foundation back in the spotlight (Alex Power, Leech, Artie Maddicks, Bentley-23, Dragon Man, etc.) was great, although I especially enjoyed the page with Alex Power (from Power Pack).  Johnny Storm & Darla Deering (Ms. Thing) I also found the structure of the story quite interesting. The first page and all subsequent pages in which we see the kids in ‘interview mode’ actually take place right after the last panel of the last page. Fraction has cleverly taken advantage of these moments that are only revealed as flashbacks in the end, and at the same time he plays with time paradoxes as the Fantastic Four leave our universe, promising to return in minutes, only to disappear for several days.  This first issue is a delight to read but it is also a pleasure to look at thanks to the beautiful work of Michael Allred and Laura Allred. I’ve been a fan of the Allreds since the early days of Madman, I still remember how thrilled I was the first time I read Madman, there is something so unique about Mike’s lines and Laura’s colors, together they evoke the magic of the past, the ‘retro’ charm of old comic books (which is perfect for this book, especially in the moments in which Allred pays homage to Jack ‘King’ Kirby). I wish the Allred couple could stay on FF for as long as Fraction keeps writing it, this magnificent creative team is producing some of the best FF (both Fantastic and Future) stories I’ve read in years. Originally Published at http://artbyarion.blogspot.com/2013/01/ff-1-matt-fraction-michael-allred.html
