Rusty drags Sgt. Hatred, Pete White, and Billy Quizboy to his vacation paradise which he's visited since he was a little kid. However, there's trouble in paradise as Augustus St. Cloud arrives to put the damper and CRUSH his arch-nemesis along with anyone associated with him. Oh, we get more Jonas Sr. stuff.
What I thought was going to be a one-off episode turned out to be something more than that. Oh sure, the filler stuff is all over the episode. We don't get any continuation of any of the plots so far this season. All we get is an adventure Rusty has with his friends and is forced to fight against the other super-villain in their lives who isn't the Monarch in the recently upgraded super-villain Augustus St. Cloud.
Now, they didn't overdo themselves with homage quotes or Hollywood idols as they overdid in the previous one with St. Cloud, but the episode still had some in them. The joke was good the first time and really, the two jokes that cracked me involving the character was the FX2 clown and the Clash of the Titans (the classic, not the crappy remake franchise) homage sequence with St. Cloud as the Kraken and Billy as Perseus. The rest were good, but been there done that (okay and the Last Crusade line was good too, but I blame fellow OH poster Starlord for striking up enjoyment of that quote more).
The subplot with Sgt. Hatred wasn't bad either, when you think it goes for the predictable loop it instead throws a few curve balls Venture Brothers style. We learn a few things of why Rusty loves this darn island so much, and a bit of Jonas Sr. Who, as the episode kept going on I was wondering why he was so lax, until the end of the episode with the final punch line which really made the episode for me. Yeah it was predictable, but at least it kept throwing you all these different reasons linking to the obvious fact. That's why I love this show. Just when you think you'll get the obvious you get the obvious along with some twists.
Though one subplot I wished lasted a bit longer was the L. Ron vs. Jonas Sr. fight. Man that was a briefly short fight that was awesome for the thirty seconds we had. It explained so much, along with just how purely evil L. Ron was as a Arnim Zola ghost leaping to robot body to robot body. Like-wise was the very short, but hilarious Brock Samson cameo who fills Hatred in on the island before getting cut short as the reason Brock himself got distracted. How? It's Brock and there's not a single thing to kill so what else do we know that Brock does best? EXACTLY, and that was hilarious for the brief moment we got that.
All and all this was a one-off that had a few nice elements. It wasn't spectacular or anything like the previous, and after the first three knock outs. What saved it for me was the brief jokes that I wish lasted a little longer and the payoff to the reason the islanders “love” Rusty. It hit that Venture Brothers' peak that I love so much about this show. The jokes were reused, but a few made me crack a giggle. Even, when meh the Venture Brothers are entertaining.
