Expendables 2 Opens to Nostalgic $28 Million

The Expendables 2 either underperformed, or performed spectacularly, depending on what decade it is.

Studios were really hoping that The Expendables 2, the sequel to director Sylvester Stallone's retro action movie The Expendables, would gross about $40 million domestically this weekend, but the movie fell short at just $28 million, despite topping the charts. While some might be disappointed at this performance, The Outhouse prefers to look for the silver lining. You see, The Expendables is a movie franchise that counts on nostalgia to put asses in the seats. Its stars, including Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Jean-Claude Van Damme, are action stars whose heydey was the 1980s, and the movies themselves are stylistic throwbacks to the action movies of that period.
With that in mind, the $28 million dollar performance is not bad at all. First Blood, the first movie in Stallone's highly successful Rambo series, grossed only $27.5 million in its opening weekend in 1982. Van Damme's Universal Soldier, released in 1992, only grossed $36 million dometically in its entire run, and it was a high point in Van Damme's storied career. Sure, movie tickets back in the eighties cost a nickel and girls had hairy bushes, but not much else has changed, so The Outhouse would like to declare The Expendables 2 a rousing success.
Other movies that opened this weekend include Paranorman, which made $14 million, and Sparkle, which made $12 million. Bourne Legacy, in its second week, took in $17 million, and The Dark Knight Rises made another $11 million. The totals listed are all domestic gross.
