Source: James Cameron Says "Battle Angel Alita" Manga Adaptation Work Planned for 2017
At a recent technology forum in Mexico City, director James Cameron revealed that he plans to finally get to adapting the Japanese manga (and anime) property, Battle Angel Alita (known in Japan as Gunnm 銃夢) for the big screen… in 2017.
Cameron has been linked with Battle Angel Alita at least since 2006, around the time when Avatar was being developed. At the time, he wanted to wait until the technology was capable of producing the movie and it looks like it may be ready by 2017, around the time Avatar 3 should be done shooting.
Battle Angel Alita started off as a manga which ran from 1990-1995 in Japan. An Original Video Animation (OVA) adapting the manga was produced in 1993. Several sequels to the manga were also produced. The story is set in a post-apocalypic future and tells the tale of Alita (Gally in the Japanese version) who is afemale cyborg with amnesia. She was found heavily damaged by cybermedic Daisuke Ido in a dump, who repairs and revives her. She goes on to become a mercenary hunter-warrior taking down criminals and participating in violent sports games in the sprawl below the floating city of Tiphares/Salem.E
EDIT: Changed year Cameron's been teasing Battle Angel.
