If you thought the time that Polish newspaper mistakenly identified popular internet meme Pedobear as one of the mascots of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics was a good time, you're gonna love this. Apparently, Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand had to apologize Monday after proudly displaying a mural painted by students which depicted genocidal despot Adolf Hitler as part of a group of superheroes that also consisted of Superman, Batman, The Hulk, Captain America, Yellow Star Guy, Plastic Army Man, and Nude Albino Thing. We're not making this up, and honestly, there's no way we could make it funnier than it naturally is anyway. Here's a picture:
Of course, we understand that there's nothing conventionally humorous about a dude who killed millions of people and is generally regarded as one of if not the most evil human beings ever to live, but, I mean, come on. Just look at that!
University representatives are claiming that the mural was meant to show the contrast between Hitler and the superheroes, with Hitler being depicted in black and white and the superheroes being in color, but we don't buy it. Clearly, Hitler is very popular over at Chulalongkorn University, as evidenced by the young woman posing like him in front of the mural, engaging in a fun-loving Nazi salute.
Because this sort of thing must be a sore spot for them, the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish human rights group, was none too pleased with the mural, telling the United Press:
Hitler as a superhero? Is he an appropriate role model for Thailand's younger generation -- a genocidal hate monger who mass murdered Jews and Gypsies and who considered people of color as racially inferior? The Simon Wiesenthal Center is outraged and disgusted by this public display at Thailand's leading school of higher education.
Well sure, if you put it that way.
So what do you think? Was this a wacky misunderstanding, or is Thailand's top University secretly run by Nazis? Personally, considering this mural was painted by college graduates, we find it hard to believe that they didn't know what they were doing, but we suppose stranger things have happened.
