The DC line of superhero action figures under Mattel has been canceled due to low subscriptions.
Three days ago, Mattel announced the results of their subscription service for DC Infinite Classic Heroes, Ghostbusters, and Masters of the Universe. Unfortunately, for the first two neither met the required subscription criteria. MotU on the other hand, exceeded subscriptions to 115%.
What does this mean? The Ecto-1 car that Mattel wanted for their Ghostbusters line is dead in the water. Likewise the Build-A-Figure Doomsday Mattel showed off at this year's SDCC and the line that was to be around it (Superboy, Aquaman, Ice, and Oceanmaster).
No word yet if these figures will see the light of day in another line. Ironically the Superboy figure seems forever doomed as it was a cast-off mold from the final wave of Young Justice figures (along with Miss Martian, which still hasn't seen the light).
The move signals the death knell for DC characters not from the Batman or Superman. It does perhaps open the possiblity of DC Entertainment itself aka DC Collectibles to do it's own ventures into this field more. It already has done 3.75" action figures for Green Lantern and Injustice: Gods Amongst Us. Until, then this is all theories and whatever happens we'll keep you updated on any developments due to this story.
