Scott Lobdell surprised fans when he announced that he'd be killing Superboy in Superman #25 and replacing him with a different character. In yesterday's Superman panel, Lobdell stated that Superboy would make "the ultimate sacrifice" and would be replaced the following issue with Jon Lane Kent, the genetic offspring of Superman and Lois Lane.
According to our Googling, the New 52 Jon Lane Kent is a Lobdell creation, a future child of Superman and Lane whose powers developed in such a way that a clone (the current Superboy) was created to help stabilize his powers, which were killing him. How Jon Lane Kent ends up in the present is anyone's guess, but I guess we'll find that out later.
Of course, this announcement should be taken with just a grain of salt. Lobdell has joked around on panels before, most recently telling fans that he had been fired from Teen Titans a few weeks ago. However, CBR pointed out that the solicitation text for Superman #25 supports his statement:
“KRYPTON RETURNS” concludes! Months before its explosion, Superman finds himself locked in combat against H’El! Can he find a way to save the planet? A most unexpected foe stands in his path: Jor-El! A hero will fall during this epic adventure!
I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens next.
