When most people think of Valiant, they think of a comic book publisher, not totally bitchin' rock gods. When it comes to the Flying V, however, the question they should be asking themselves is: can't it be both? Today, Valiant sent out a press release announcing Valiant: Greatest Hits #1, a $5.99 collection featuring five comic books that Valiant considers must-reads, and an excellent and cost-efficient way to find out what all the buzz is about. To find out more about this exciting new release, we spoke to the hipsters that lean against the wall outside The Outhouse's offices, smoking Marlboro Lights (but not inhaling).

"Greatest hits albums aren't cool, man," said one hipster, ironically wearing a Black Sabbath 'We Sold Our Soul for Rock N' Roll' greatest hits t-shirt. "Only posers buy those. You gotta get the original albums, man."

But comic books cost $4 a pop. For $6, a reader can try out five new comics here, and then decide to go get the individual series later, if they like them.

"No one buys comics because they like them," explained another hipster as she sipped a tall can of Pabst Blue Ribbon.

"That's totally lame, man," she told us. "I only buy comics to prove how much more obscure my taste in comics is than anyone else's."

But Valiant is one of the fastest-rising stars in the comic book industry. They're getting praise from all over the place. A lot of people think they're showing the Big Two how to do a shared superhero universe right.

"I was into Valiant in 2009, man," claimed another hipster wearing an uncomfortably tight hooded sweatshirt.

What? Valiant wasn't even publishing any books back then. They were in the process of relaunching the Valiant Universe we know and love today.

"Exactly, man," he said. "No one else was buying Valiant comics back then."

That's because there weren't any!

"Whatever, man," he scoffed. "You're old."

Well, clearly this is the beginning of the end for the Flying V, as they start their slow but inevitable slide into corporate mediocrity. It looks like we're left with no other choice but to run the press release... ironically:

"One of our major obstacles is that everything we've put out has been so well received. Potential new readers are hearing good things about all of our books, which makes it difficult to know where to start reading. At New York Comic-Con this past weekend, we heard the same question again and again: 'I've heard great things, my friends love Valiant, but no one can agree where I should start. Can you help?'" said Valiant CEO & Chief Creative Officer Dinesh Shamdasani. "MUST READ VALIANT: GREATEST HITS #1 is the perfect answer. This is a collection of the five single issues we've found to be most effective at giving new readers a clean entry point and a taste for more."
Valiant's ongoing monthly titles will also fall under the MUST READ VALIANT banner this winter with a new wave of self-contained stories and easy jumping-on points from some of the brightest talents in the industry today. Look for new MUST READ VALIANT milestones each month, beginning in November with Quantum and Woody #5 by James Asmus and Ming Doyle; then continuing on in December with Shadowman #13 by Peter Milligan and Roberto De La Torre; and in January with Bloodshot and H.A.R.D.
