Last week we ran a story about the R2D2 being up for the role of R2D2, and we hoped he would get the part. It all started when JJ Abrams tweeted an image of him with R2D2 and producer Kathleen Kennedy and a couple other people nobody recognized; it sparked the story that the droid may continue on as part of the new trilogy.
Variety has now confirmed that R2D2 will be in Episode VII and were able to find out the two men in the picture are Lee Towersey and Oliver Steeples, members of the creature effects team for Episode VII. Originally they met Kennedy this summer in Germany and impressed her with the droids they built as part of the R2-D2 Builders Club. When it came time to staff up the effects team for Episode VII, Kennedy referred them for the gig.
Surely, with R2 in the mix his good buddy C3P0 will join him?
