Listen, children, and we shall snitch
On the Wonder Con ride of Uncle Rich
On the eighteenth of April, Two Thousand Fourteen
Hardly a fanboy can be seen
Who hasn’t heard his colorist pitch.
He said to DC Comics, “If royalties're paid
To the artists and those who write,
Put on the covers the names who made
The books something more than black and white.
Or I on my platform there will be,
Ready to blog and spread the alarm
Through every website and cheap hit farm,
For the internet warriors to be up and to arm."
Then he said “Pip pip!” and with tooting horn,
Strutted around the WonderCon floor,
Where the vendors sell and publishers bray,
Past the fangirls who Batgirl cosplay --
One as Cass, two as Stephanie.
And Johnston, that British man-of-war
Did blog one time, two times, three, more?
About the insult DC colorists endure
And will not stop ’til royalties are secure.
So through the con rode Uncle Rich;
And so through the convention went his demand
To every panel for the DC brand —
A cry of defiance, not just a bitch,
A voice in the darkness, a knock at the door,
And a horn that shall toot forevermore!
Through all our history, to the last,
In the hour of darkness for colorists,
The people will waken and fight to enrich
The recognition deserved, on which we insist,
Thanks to the Wonder Con Message of Uncle Rich.
Thus far, Yanick Paquette, Rico Renzi, and Scott Snyder have spoken out publicly, calling for DC to recognize colorists (or colourists as Johston calls them) as integral to the creation of comics and afford them same recognition and respect as writers and artists. Is the writing on the wall for DC? We hope so.
Seriously, if you like Batman AT ALL show @fcoo some love. The guy deserves MARQUIS billing, credit, royalties (as do all colorists)& beyond— Scott Snyder (@Ssnyder1835) April 18, 2014
