'Kamen Rider Amazons' Now Streaming On Amazon Prime

For us gaijin, it's Amazon Riders

Before there were Power Rangers (sentai shows in Japan), there were more solitary heroes such as Ultraman and Kamen Rider. Like the Power Rangers, these tokusatsu (special effects) shows featured costume heroes beating holy justice into monsters on a weekly basis, with new incarnations annually or every few years. Ultraman has had several of its shows reach US shores, most notably 1967's Ultra Seven and more recent incarnations playing on streaming services such as Crunchyroll.

Unfortunately Kamen Rider never was distributed as widely as Ultraman or sentai series, but did gain popularity in small markets such as Hawai‘i, which aired the subtitled Kamen Rider V3 series in the early 70s and re-aired it in the 90s in a second smaller wave of popularity. Uhhh, let's not even talk about the travesty that was Saban's Masked Rider which tried to give the Power Rangers treatment to Kamen Rider Black RX and Kamen Rider ZO in 1995… {{{shudder}}}

That's what might have killed televised Kamen Rider in the States though.

However, there is now a recent incarnation of Kamen Rider available legally in the United States. This was actually announced back in June of 2016 when Amazon Japan revealed that they were going to stream some of their original programing internationally, including an Ultraman Orb spinoff (still haven't seen this come to be), and Kamen Rider Amazons.

Kamen Rider Amazons is a 2016 reimagining of 1974's Kamen Rider Amazon series. Kamen Rider Amazon was a very different kind of Kamen Rider, which at the time were cyborgs with bug motifs. Amazon used Incan magic and some science to transform into Kamen Rider Amazon. Though a kid's show, the series was known for its violence; one of Amazon's finishers was decapitating monsters with his claws.

Amazons ups the violence and number of riders, and unlike its predecessor, is not aimed at kids. In Amazons, the world has been "infested" by thousands of monsters called Amazonz. Nozoma Pharmacy hired a task force to hunt down and eliminate the Amazonz, including two more intelligent ones named Alpha and Omega, who may actually be more beneficial to their cause than not. Maybe.

In the US, Kamen Rider Amazons is titled Amazon Riders, and season one is available for streaming to Amazon Prime customers… today.

In Japan, Kamen Rider Amazons had two seasons, and in May two movies (Awakening and Transmigration) will be released which are re-edited versions of seasons 1 and 2. On May 18, Kamen Rider Amazons the Movie: The Last Judgement will hit theaters continuing the story from the TV series.

Hopefully the rest of Amazons, and even more Kamen Rider, officially hit our shores…
