This special one-shot of the Avengers dubbed “The Enemy Within,” focuses on the battle with Captain Marvel's sanity. If you haven't been reading Captain Marvel by Kelly Sue DeConnick, the series recently unveiled that Carol Danvers now has a brain lesion that causes her immense pain when she attempts to fly. The lesion has also caused Danvers to black out, lose focus and question herself.
This one-shot is the set up issue for a huge five part crossover event with both DeConnick books in, of course, Captain Marvel and Avengers Assemble. Still unknown to Danvers, the foe besides herself that has been playing havoc with her life is none other than Yon-Rogg, the Kree who battled Captain Mar-vell to stop the Psyche-Magnitron, which resulted in Danvers getting super powers.
Rogg distracts Cap by kidnapping her friend Rose, drawing her into a fight with the Grapplers and more dinosaurs. Jessica Drew aka Spider-Women does her best to help Danvers out while making sure she doesn't do anything stupid, but, alas, she does. A scrap from the Psyche-Magnitron, which Danvers kept as a memento, is now missing from her apartment. I have a pretty good guess as to who took it, but we will have to wait to find out how Captain Marvel and the Avengers will stop him from turning that scrap back into a bomb.
I am a recent reader to the new Captain Marvel series and have been enjoying it so far. Despite Cap being so powerful, she has a lot of issues to deal with and the brain lesion doesn't help. Even though the writing/story line has pushed this series the art has not in my opinion.
The art in this series so far has seemed really loose and not very detailed. However, the art in this one-shot by Scott Hepburn was very refreshing. In has a nice sense of style that reminds of Davis Aja's work on Hawkeye, but a little more detailed and less of a pop-art feeling. Hepburn's Cap looks bad (in a good way) and looks like she wants to put a whooping on someone.
Danvers seems to always be a step behind Yon-Rogg and will need the help of the other Avengers to take him down for good. Crossovers like this are somewhat frowned upon, but I think this one will be worth the hype. Captain Marvel has been a very underrated series and hopefully this event will shine some light on the book and draw in some new readers. While this book was a set up for bigger things to come, it was nonetheless an action packed issue that keeps you on your toes with what Cap will do and how her brain reacts to her exploits.
