Well, I'll try not to spoil the movie, but just in case...***Spoilers!!!***
I am a horror movie junkie, so my favorite time of year is coming up. All of the horror movies are hitting theatres, people are going to be putting up Halloween decorations soon and haunted houses are going to start scaring the girls right out of their skinny jeans. As an added bonus I got to kick off the season with You’re Next, which came out in theatres on 8/23.
From the trailer I saw, I went into the movie thinking that it was just another slasher flick akin to The Strangers or the more recent The Purge. The movie starts out like your typical slasher flick. Set up the key characters you do or don’t want to die, reveal key plot points, maybe a little gore. However, there is a part that distinctly sets You’re Next apart from other horror movies I’ve seen recently is where the plot takes a sudden unexpected twist. For me, that moment was when the family is first attached and there’s a bunch of dialogue so hilarious that I found myself laughing out loud from the actually hilarious script. There were laugh out loud moments for everyone in the theatre and even people in the audience clapping to celebrate when a disliked character was killed in an original way. Even when I could guess that certain key items or events would come into play during the movie I was still surprised at how it was handled.
All in all, You’re Next is the best horror movie I’ve seen since Cabin In The Woods. The characters, especially Erin (played by Sharni Vinson), were complex and had more to their character than met the eye. The character development along with various plot twists kept my mind busy. On top of all of that the script was actually funny. I feel that the trailer didn’t do the movie justice and I’m not sure why they decided to go with a generic slasher movie trailer. Maybe the filmmakers wanted it to be a surprise for the viewers when they’re actually in the movie? If that was the intent it completely worked for this reviewer. With all of the witty dialogue, interesting characters, plot twists and laugh out loud moments all wrapped up in a gorey fake blood package, this movie is a must see for the fall horror movie releases. Do you know what you’re going to be for Halloween? After seeing You’re Next I finally do, and I will have a great time being Erin. Real axe optional. Next up for me is hopefully Indisious 2
