E.T. Dick Jokes - A Sex Criminals #2 Review

Was the title unclear? This book contains glowing alien penis jokes. I reviewed it.

You remember Family Circus right? The one panel newspaper comic about the foibles of the “average” American family? And sometimes there’d be a panel where the little whatshisname kid ran all over the place as indicated by a dashed line?

Sex Criminals #2 lays that gag over a porno shop with a vagina rug.

So that’s what you’re getting into. #2 picks up right where #1 left off. The recap page is a jokey page-by-page breakdown of last issue and then we’re back to Suzie and Jon who have just stopped time in a bank via mutual orgasm. And, sure, that’ll probably work out but for the 3 glowy-clothed “sex/time cops”(?) who are coming in after them. But before that can happen we flash back again, so we can hear Jon’s tale of discovery as told to Suzie. I don’t want to spoil any of the jokes or beats so I’ll just say it’s both hilarious and awkward.

It’s difficult to review comedy; it’s such an individual experience, the things that a person finds funny or not. For example, I dislike Jackass and all its related TV shows, movies and performers. I can understand why people find it funny and enjoy it but it’s not for me. On the other hand I own the pretty universally panned Kelsey Grammer submarine comedy Down Periscope on both VHS and DVD. I bought that movie TWICE and it has a 13% on Rotten Tomatoes. So with that in mind I laughed quite a bit while reading Sex Criminals. Fraction has a way with jokes and double entendres, they’re not just “bits”, they’re clearly part of the conversation these people are having. And it’s a well written conversation too, wedged in between jokes about fingering and porn star names is an almost sweet tale of self-discovery, much in the same way that #1 told Suzie’s story. But who do you get to draw such a fantastical/realistic/sci-fi/sex comedy?

Chip Zdarsky, God’s gift to cartooning.

Ok, so maybe that’s a little much, but the stuff Zdarsky does here just works perfectly for me. Jon, Suzie and the rest of the people in the book are drawn realistically; not everybody has perky breasts, nobody has visible abs. It took a second read for me to notice that “teenage” Jon has a big nose that’s awkward on his face while “adult” Jon is a guy with a sorta big nose that he clearly grew into. And the background stuff! There are logos and slogans everywhere and most of them are gags and one-liners. The storytelling is great and the emotion and posture of the characters slows the reader down so they’re not just blowing through the story and… the whole thing is just a wonderful read.

Sex Criminals is different than anything else I’m reading right now, and that’s without the sci-fi/crime angle (which I almost don’t want to kick in as I’m having so much fun with these characters). I don’t know how Fraction does this thing where he finds the prefect collaborator for some offbeat work (Satellite Sam, Hawkeye) but as long as he keeps it up I’ll be reading.
