IDW Unmasks M.A.S.K.

This ain't your daddy's M.A.S.K.

Source: Exclusive: '80s cartoon 'M.A.S.K.' gets comic reboot this fall

It wasn't all that unpredictable. IDW has been publishing a lot of comics tied to Hasbro properties. You gotcher Transformers comics, yer G.I. Joe comics, Outhouse Staffer Zechs' favorite My Little Pony comics, and Jude Terror's favorite Jem and the Holograms comics. Micronauts just hit comic book shelves, and Rom Spaceknight will be landing in July (though you can catch a sneak peek with Rom #0 this week on Free Comic Book Day). That's a lot of Hasbro, but get ready for one more: M.A.S.K.

M.A.S.K. (an acronym for Mobile Armored Strike Kommand) was an 1985 cartoon and toyline by DIC and Kenner. M.A.S.K. was a task force led by Matt Trakker which donned their masks and piloted transformable vehicles to kombat  combat the evil crime organization V.E.N.O.M. (Vicious Evil Network Of Mayhem), with their own masks and vehicles.

The upcoming comic will be an update to the 80s cartoon by writer Brandon Easton (sorry Mike Quackenbush) and artist Tony Vargas, described as a "Fast and Furious spin". Easton describes the series:

"This is a M.A.S.K. for the 21st century with a diverse team of specialists who are chosen for a top-secret program with a painful learning curve" … "Ultimately, each participant will have to choose a side — and no matter which side they choose, the consequences will be great."

The new comic series will resemble the cartoon, but different:

"We won't be going too grim, gritty or dark. However you're not going to see a teenage kid riding a cowardly robot across the battlefield."

The new Trakker is described as a cross between Elon Musk and Idris Elba. He was a troubled teen, and M.A.S.K. will be his last dance of redemption. The leader of V.E.N.O.M., Miles Mayhem, will be a "master manipulator" and "brilliant strategist" with is organization being more deadly than before. Easton says that Mayhem will be a bond:

" … [Mayhem's quest for power] provides the catalyst for Matt to stop searching for a ‘role model’ and figure out what it means to follow his own heart and soul."

In addition to comics, M.A.S.K. will be headed to movie theaters, in the same universe as G.I. Joe, Rom, Micronauts, and Visionaries. Hmnn... could a Visionaries comic by IDW be in our futures? If so, it would be yet another title (others being G.I. Joe, Rom, Micronauts) from that movie universe list that was once published by Marvel
